Job Search FAQ

I lost my job.  How can I find out how to file for unemployment or obtain other benefits?

Unemployment

Most residents in Tennessee can file claims by telephone or online.   However, if you live in Fayette, Tipton, Lauderdale or Shelby counties, only "lack of work" claims may be filed online.   Otherwise, residents in these four counties must file in person at one of these locations.

Unemployment information for those living in other areas can be found on the Tennessee State website.  Here are links to two different pages.

Health Insurance

The federal law, Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), allows qualified employees to continue their health insurance benefits, at their expense.  The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) provides for a 65 percent reduction in COBRA premiums for certain assistance eligible individuals for up to nine months.

Do you know of any good websites to look for workforce training?

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development has a website with resources for workforce training through Tennessee's Statewide Career Center System.

Where can I find information on different types of work/occupations/careers?  What career is right for me?

We have materials available to help with career options.  Come by the Information Desk or call (901) 457-2601.

Do you have study guides or sample tests for employment examinations?  Are exam preparation materials available online from the Library?

The Library subscribes to the Learning Express Library, which provides test preparation materials and interactive practice exams that will help people improve their scores on academic, civil service, military, and professional licensing and certification exams.  You may use it for free in the library or from home with your library card.  Visit the library's homepage. Go to Resources. Go to Search Library Online Databases. Choose Education and then Learning Express Library.  You will be required to create a login and a password.

You can also search the library catalog for books on different exams.  To find them, type the name of the test you need to take in the "words or phrase" area of the library's catalog.

How can I reserve a computer for a job search?

Computers are available when you arrive at the library.  Computers cannot be reserved online, over the phone, or in advance.  You will need a library card to use a computer. Access is limited to two hours per day per card.

Can you help me upload my resume?

If you have resume saved on a flash drive or as an attachment in an e-mail, you can upload and submit it to a job search site using any of the public computers.  If you need assistance, please ask at the Information Desk.

Are there classes offered in which I can improve my computer skills?

Visit the library's adult program page to find upcoming computer classes.
